Don't give a thief an easy win!

Did you know that most burglaries and break-ins are preventable?

Beating the burglar is simple, set them a challenge and you and your neighbours needn't become targets.

It's not just down to luck - take action to stop thieves from stealing the prize with these simple security steps.

To keep your home secure...

  • ...have front and back doors fitted with good quality locks and easy-to-reach windows with window locks
  • ...have a spy hole fitted to the front door so you can see the caller without opening it, or have a security chain fitted
  • ...always lock external doors and windows when you go out
  • ...use timers for lights and radios for when it gets dark or you are away
  • ...have well-positioned motion-sensitive security lighting

When leaving the car...

  • ...always close the windows and sunroof and lock all the doors
  • ...hide everything out of sight
  • ...keep all valuables with you (MP3s, phones, sunglasses, laptops, netbooks, even satnav suction pads and support cradles)
  • ...take with you removable music systems or satnavs (and wipe away suction pad marks left on the windscreen)
  • ...keep car documents at home, not in the car

When your car is parked at home...

  • ...keep your keys out of sight in the house and well away from doors and windows
  • ...use a letter box restrictor to prevent burglars from reaching in to take keys or to open the door
